BiogasSA was founded in 2009 with an initial focus on rural and domestic biogas solutions and has supplied and/or installed over 120 such digesters to date. BiogasSA signed their first turnkey commercial biogas project in 2013 for a 0.4MW plant at Morgan Abattoir in Springs – the project started with a full bankable feasibility study and resulted in a complete design and build plant.
BiogasSA has also completed numerous feasibility studies for dairies, piggeries, fruit & vegetable packaging plants and also high level studies on the Waste to Energy (WtE) potential at municipal WWTW for institutions such as SA Local Government Association (SALGA), for the German funded organisation GIZ and currently for Pikitup.
BiogasSA held the first biogas workshop in SA in November 2012 where the need was identified for the establishment of a national biogas association. The Southern African Biogas Industry Association (SABIA) was subsequently established and Mark Tiepelt, the MD of BiogasSA, was elected as its first chairman. Mark was also re-elected as chairman for a second term in January 2015.
Mark Tiepelt played a pivotal role in the establishment of the influential National Biogas Platform that was created specifically to address the hurdles and challenges faced by the biogas industry in SA.
Dr George Tivchev (PhD in anaerobic digestion) is a long standing associate of BiogasSA and provides specialist consulting services.
BiogasSA has a close association with the internationally renowned Danish biogas company, Xergi, with whom they will contract for industrial size biogas projects in the MW range. BiogasSA is also the SA agent for the German based steel panel tank manufacturers and installers, Schumann Stahlbau, for Dutch gas dome company, Wiefferink, as well as for Italian biogas conditioning equipment company, Progeco.
