Biogas In The News

New industry group bullish on SA’s biogas growth prospects.
"The rebates currently on offer from Eskom, together with incentives being extended by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) are creating the conditions for a possible biogas “golden age” in South Africa, the head of the nascent Southern African Biogas Industry Association (SABIA) asserts.Chairperson Mark Tiepelt tells Engineering News Online that particular opportunities are arising in off-grid applications, particularly in the farming, food processing and municipal waste sectors."

South Africa Uses Biogas to Turn Waste into Power.
"JOHANNESBURG— Like many countries, South Africa is struggling to meet its energy needs.  But instead of developing new technologies, the nation is trying a different tack - using waste to generate power. This is the unlikely source of South Africa’s future energy : a massive sewage pipe which runs through northern Johannesburg. At a wastewater treatment plant, sewage is turned into energy, in the form of biogas.  Plant engineers say electricity price hikes in South Africa pushed them to look into generating their own power."

SA not using its biogas potential.
"Biogas has thus far received little attention in South Africa, considering that it has the potential to displace up to 2,500 MW of grid electricity and other thermal power supply options in the country. There are an estimated 200 biogas digesters scattered across South Africa, most of these accounted for by small domestic units and a few non-government organisation (NGO) driven initiatives. In comparison there are 12 million biogas digesters in India and 17 million in China. Germany is building a commercial digester every eight hours and has an installed capacity of over 9,600 MW. In countries such as Germany, biogas technology is highly advanced and is applied primarily to produce green electricity in the megawatt range that is fed directly into the grid under a favourable renewable energy feed-in tariff (REFIT) structure. In developing countries such as India and China more basic technology is used to provide energy, mainly for cooking, with the feedstock for the digesters being human and animal waste."

Biogas – more than just hot air
"When the very expensive Limpopo and Mpumalanga coal-fired power plants (estimated at R223bn) eventually go online, they will be able to generate 26 MW in electricity a day. Unfortunately they will only plug in to the national electricity grid next year. An article on Terra Firma Academy estimates Medupi alone will gobble roughly 14 600 000 tons of coal per annum which once the Carbon Emissions tax comes in to play in 2015, could cost taxpayers R1 590 000 000 each year."

S. African biogas association launched to boost renewable energy drive
"The South African Biogas Industry Association (SABIA) was launched here Wednesday at the ongoing Africa Energy Indaba in a fresh bid to diversify energy resources. The move indicates that biogas should no "longer be lumped" together with other alternative energy sources, but holds enough weight to "stand in its own category," participants said."

Impact of Biogas industry on environment
"Let's take a more in-depth look at the Biogas space with adverse emissions from coal, nitrous oxide and sulphur dioxide causing serious problems for the local environment, the government has set a target of 8400 Mega Watts of solar projects by 2030. As we get into this Energy War, ABN is joined by Mark Tiepelt, Chairman of the Southern African Biogas Industry Association, Thabang Audat, the Acting Chief Director of the Department of Energy and Cyprian Marowa, General Manager of Infrastructure Finance for South Africa Financing Division of the Development Bank of Southern Africa."
